We’ve all experienced headaches at some point or another, but did you know that there might be an underlying cause to these headaches?
Many of us assume that it may be a tension headache, an over reacting sinus issue. Knowing what to look for to differentiate the two may help you find the right treatment for your pain.
Sinus Headaches:
You would know that you have a sinus headache when you feel pain in the cheekbones, forehead and/or bridge of your nose.
The pain may also come with a runny nose, swollen face, a fever and/or a feeling of fullness within the ear.
The underlying cause of sinus headaches may be an allergic reaction or a sinus infection.
If medically addressed, and a sinus infection is found then doctors may prescribe antibiotics, antihistamines or decongestants. Corticosteroids and pain relievers may also be a solution for the pain.
Inhaled decongestants are recommended to be used for up to 3 days- no longer. It may run the risk of exacerbating the issue.
Natural at-home cures are possible, as well. Drinking more fluids, using a humidifier and cleansing the nasal passage with saltwater may also help to ease the symptoms and discomfort.
Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are mostly felt with a dull tightness or pressure in the regions of the forehead, back of neck and/or head.
Also, muscle ache, irritability, trouble focusing, trouble sleeping and a tired feeling may accompany the dull pressure.
These headaches are often stress induced and may last 30-minutes to a few days.
However, tension headaches are not hereditary and they may also be caused by hunger, anxiety, not having enough rest, fatigue, bad posture and/or low iron levels.
Treatment includes over the counter medication such as painkillers.
At-home cures are available such as relaxation techniques, a hot bath, ice packs and/or avoiding the trigger.
Knowing the difference between these two headaches may save you time and help you cut straight to finding a treatment to resolve the issue.
